T
he Holiday: Simchat
Torah or "Rejoicing with
the Torah"
What It Celebrates: Strictly
speaking, Simchat Torah is not a
separate holiday, but rather a cel-
ebration of the completion of the
annual Torah reading cycle.
Simchat Torah is not mandated
by the Torah; in fact, it is not even
mentioned in the Torah. Simchat
Torah is completely rabbinic in
origin. Further, it is the only time
during the year when we read from
the Torah at night.
Outside of Israel, it is the sec-
ond day of the holiday of Shemini
Atzeret.

How We Celebrate: In terms of
davening (prayers), the Simchat
Torah service is identical with
Shemini Atzeret. In Israel, the two
holidays coincide. Outside of Israel,
Simchat Torah follows Shemini
Atzeret.
A defining aspect of the Simchat
Torah celebration — both at the
initial evening service and dur-
ing the following morning service
— is the hakafot, a procession
around the synagogue sanctuary of
congregants holding Torah scrolls
(typically, every Torah scroll owned
by the congregation is used). The
parade is done seven times, each
time with different people (assum-
ing the synagogue membership
is big enough; otherwise, some of
the same people will participate
more than once). Each circuit is
accompanied by the chanting of
verses, mostly from various psalms,
followed by the spirited singing of
hymns, dancing and merriment.
Everyone in the synagogue partici-
