nswer (3rd of 3 parts):
Dear Elyse, No discussion
of FDA-approved artificial
sweeteners would be complete
without looking at the two main
controversies surrounding them.

(1) Aspartame (Nutrasweet and
Equal), currently, the most popular
artificial sweetener in the U.S., was
originally held up for FDA
approval due to the suspi-
cion that it may cause brain
cancer. In 1980, A Public
Board of Inquiry conclud-
ed that there was insuf-
ficient evidence to prove
\ that aspartame did not
cause brain tumors and
recommended against
approval. In 1981,
citing evidence to the
contrary, the newly ap-
pointed FDA chief, Arthur
Hull Hayes (from Michigan),
approved aspartame for sale in the
U.S.; controversy about aspartame
continues to this day.

FDA

(2) From 1977 to 2001, Saccha-
rin (Sweet 'n Low), was required
by the FDA to bear a hazardous
product warning label as result of
studies linking it to bladder cancer
in laboratory rats. The label was
removed when further studies
determined that the cancer-causing
mechanism was unique to rats.
