While orthodontic treatment is most often associated
with straightening adolescent teeth, there are other pur-
poses to which this specialized branch of dentistry may
be applied. Consider the case of a person who required
treatment to force the lower canine or cuspid tooth into
position after it failed to erupt. To affect the desired out-
come, the patient's lower teeth were bracketed with an
Nelson Hersh
orthodontic button bonded onto the protruding tip of the
DDS, MS
unerupted tooth. Elastic wires were then connected from Licensed Specialist
the brackets to the button, and replaced monthly. After
a period of time the button was removed and a bracket placed on the erupt-
ing tooth until the tooth was in its ideal position and the braces removed. An
archwire linked the bracket to the orthodontic attachments on other teeth and
helped push the tooth upward and in place.
More commonly, an upper canine has insufficient space to properly align and
can give an uncomfortable look of a "fang" tooth. It may have a loss of space
(be trapped) and cause resultant mid-line discrepancies. An upper cuspid also
may have an improper eruption path, be unable to erupt, or even have an erup-
tion path that may endanger the health or cause other permanent teeth to be
lost. If a child has most of his permanent teeth with the exception of an upper
cuspid, a consultation with an orthodontist should be made.
Parents with any orthodontic concerns for their child should consult an ortho-
dontist concerning the need for orthodontic treatment. As a dental specialist,
an orthodontist has elected to limit his practice to this specific area or exper-
tise and has received additional training by an accredited dental school for
advanced education. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate
to contact Dr. Hersh at the newest state-of-the-art facility in West Bloomfield/
Commerce Township, 2300 Haggerty Road, Suite 1160, 248-926-4100.
