"I can't wait to come home to per-
form," Steingold says. "My parents
[Susan and Marc Steingold] and
grandparents have seen the play in
other cities, and it will be exciting to
perform for the teachers who taught
me a lot of what I know."
Dana's mom shares her daughter's
enthusiasm. The two briefly explored
acting opportunities in 1994
California but quickly returned home
after the earthquake.
"It's wonderful to see Dana living
out all that she worked so hard to
do:' Susan Steingold says. "We're very
proud of her and thrilled that she
will be home for the run of the play.
We still have reservations [about her
choice of career] because it's not an
easy life:'
While on the road and doing
some sightseeing, Steingold contin-
ues to administer Shifting Ground
Productions, an organization she
helped form to bring interactive
musical entertainment to children in
hospitals.
"My days are quite free as I tour:'
says the actress, who attended West
Bloomfield High School and joined
her family at Temple Shir Shalom.
"I do a lot of the bookkeeping and
phone calls. It's disappointing not to
get to the hospitals because that's my

favorite part:"
Dana looks forward to returning to
Michigan to be with her parents, two
sisters and a brother as well as other
relatives and friends. She has plans for
showing off the area to her stage fam-
ily, with a visit to the Franklin Cider
Mill as a priority.
"This will be the first time in five
years that I'll be home for more than
four or five days, and it will be com-
forting to be in a house and not a
hotel," Steingold says. "It will be nice
not to have to worry about what food
can be delivered after 10 p.m. My
mom will have food for me."
Steingold has not set long-term
goals for her career.
"My goal is to enjoy where I'm at:'
she says. "It's easy to get caught up into
what's coming next. It's so rare to stay
with a show for a year or two, and I
really want to enjoy that.
"I hope to work enough to sustain a
lifestyle. That's what my parents want
for me, too. I feel very lucky so far and,
hopefully, I'll continue to be."

The 25th Annual Putnam County
Spelling Bee runs Oct. 2-21 at
Detroit's Fisher Theatre. The cur-
tain goes up at 8 p.m. Tuesdays-
Fridays, 2 and 8 p.m. Saturdays
and 7:30 p.m. Sundays. $25-$70.
