The Shul honors Shenkmans for
longtime support, generosity.

A
t a Sept. 7 gathering at the
Shul-Chabad Lubavitch
in West Bloomfield, Jack
Shenkman mentioned how nice it was
that 300 guests came to celebrate his
and wife Miriam's 67th wedding anni-
versary.
Actually, the celebration was a trib-
ute to "their many years of support
and generosity to Chabad-Lubavitch
of Michigan:' said Itty Shemtov, the
Shul's Hebrew school director and wife
of Rabbi Kasriel Shemtov, spiritual
director of the Shul.
The evening was highlighted by
the dedication of the Shul facility
now named the Jack and Miriam
Shenkman Building.
"The Shenkmans have been pillars
in the Jewish community, forging a
relationship with Chabad-Lubavitch
for over 30 years',' Itty Shemtov said.
The couple, who had annual meet-
ings with the late Lubavitcher Rebbe
Menachem M. Schneerson in New
York, was surprised at the dinner to see
a video clip of one of those meetings.
"Jack expressed that it was at the
Rebbe's urging and blessing that they
continue to actively serve and build
the Jewish community with opportu-
nities for observance and education
for all Jews without regard for labels
or affiliation," Itty Shemtov said. "The
Shul was founded on those principles.
This is why the Shul is being named
for them."
Shul member Ron Ferber of West
Bloomfield described the Shenkmans
as "a couple who have taken such
an interest in leadership, education,
Jewish continuity, caring and giving.
"When I was yet a little child, they
were active leaders in Jewish educa-
tion for the Detroit Jewish community.
To me, these are people who personify
community involvement.
"I am personally inspired by the
Shenkmans' example of giving to
a community, and I think it's most
appropriate that this spiritual home
for a community, this place where we
all can really feel comfortable, bears
their name." Fl
