Gift Trip Removed

New York JTA — Bidders in a Jewish
National Fund auction cannot win
a trip to the Playboy mansion after
all. The JNF of Greater New York
has removed from the list of items
up for auction next month an all-
expenses-paid trip to a VIP party
at the Playboy mansion in Hohnby
Hills, Calif.
The JNF rescinded the trip,
which was set to be auctioned off at
a sports trivia night in Manhattan
on Oct. 11, following a JTA story in
which some interviewees described
it as tasteless. On Monday, the JNF
issued a statement to staff and lay
leaders apologizing for accepting
the trip, which was a gift from
anonymous lay leaders.

Ancient Quarry Found
Jerusalem/JTA —A quarry believed
to have supplied building blocks for
the Second Temple was unearthed
in Jerusalem. The ancient quarry,
replete with iron tools and other rel-
ics, was discovered in the northern
Jerusalem district of Ramat Shlomo
during infrastructure work for a new
school, Israel's Antiquities Authority
announced Sunday.
According to the authority, the
site shows evidence of having pro-
duced the giant blocks, some 24 feet
long, used by King Herod for the
Second Temple in the year 1 B.C.E.

Madonna, who spent Rosh

interest in a luxury residential com-
plex going up in northern Tel Aviv,
Yediot Achronot reported Sunday.
Prices for apartments there begin
at $1 million. Other prospective
clients include Steven Spielberg,
the daily added. When Madonna
was in Israel two years ago, local
media reported that she might buy
a house in Rosh Pina, a village near
the mystical town of Safed.
