T

o set the record straight,
Harvard Row Kosher
Meat and Poultry in West
Bloomfield is a kosher butcher
shop and is under supervision of
the Council of Orthodox Rabbis
of Greater Detroit (the Vaad
Harabonim).
According to Rabbi Yechiel Morris,
a member of the Southfield-based
Vaad's presidium, rumors to the
contrary may have begun when the
full-time kosher supervisor placed
there by the Vaad left his position
and customers didn't realize another
full-time kosher supervisor took his
place.
Harvard Row owner Johnny Katz
said,"Our full-time Vaad mashgiach
is here to make sure all the meat
that comes into our shop is kosher
and has the proper kosher symbols
on it. But because he's not trained
in the meat business, we also have
a second Vaad mashgiach, Leo
Steinmetz, who has been with us
since we opened 42 years ago. He is
a retired kosher butcher, who comes
in to oversee the kashering process,
including the traboring of meat
[excising the veins]!'
A year ago, customers who had
heard false rumors had questioned
the store's kosher supervision.
Neither Katz nor Rabbi Joseph
Krupnik know where the rumors
started, but the store's products have
always been kosher.
According to Rabbi Morris, there
is a search "for someone who will fit
the role of a mashgiach in a butcher
shop" so Katz will no longer have to
hire two supervisors. "We are look-
ing forward to continuing our strong
relationship with Harvard Row" El
