Beyond the Pale: "Our sounds keep evolving."

eyond the Pale, a klezmer
group from Canada that per-
formed at last year's Great
Lakes Folk Festival in East Lansing,
opens the 33rd year of the Vivace con-
cert series at the Birmingham Temple
in Farmington Hills. The band's 8
p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, appearance
precedes three other programs, two
classical and one folk.
Beyond the Pale instrumentalists,
who write some of their own music
and have won recording awards, infuse
their sounds with bluegrass, jazz, reg-
gae and gypsy tones.
"Our sounds keep evolving," says
Eric Stein, 34, who plays mandolin and
formed the band in 1998. "We want to
keep growing as a group." Members
include Brett Higgins on bass, Milos
Popvic on accordion, Martin van de
Ven on clarinet, Bogdan Djukic on
violin/percussions and a yet unnamed
singer.
"We wanted a lively group to start
the series, and we have a mix planned
throughout the season," says Claire
Levine, who co-chairs the series with
Sandy Altman.
Violist Yizhak Schotten and pianist
Katherine Collier, a husband and wife

team, appear 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10.
The couple gets international book-
ings and has worked in Carnegie Hall
and Boston's Jordan Hall.
The instrumentalists, on the music
faculty at the University of Michigan,
direct Chamber Music Ann Arbor.
The Verdehr Trio — featuring
Walter Verdehr on violin, Elsa Ludewig
on clarinet and Sivia Roederer on
piano — will play 7:30 p.m. Sunday,
April 6. In residence at Michigan State
University, the trio has commissioned
more than 170 new works to add to
their repertoire and recordings.
Closing the season will be the
Chenille Sisters, whose performances
include folk, swing and parody num-
bers. The show starts 8 p.m. Saturday,
May 10, with Connie Huber on guitar
and Cheryl Dawdy and Grace Morand
adding their vocal ranges. I
