or-ah-thon is back.
Last year, more than 70
adults engaged in study on
Hoshanah Rabbah, the seventh day
of Sukkot, at the first community-
wide Tor-ah-thon, a program spon-
sored by Federation's Alliance Jewish
Education's FedEd department.
Hoshanah Rabbah is considered
the final day of the divine "judgment"
in which the fate of the Jewish New
Year is determined. It is customary to
remain awake on the night preceding
Hoshanah Rabbah and study Torah.
Dr. Mitch Parker, Florence Melton
Adult Mini-School faculty member
and coordinator of the Tor-ah-thon,
said: "We will be celebrating Torah by
studying Torah."
Tor-ah-thon will take place 10
a.m.-noon Wednesday, Oct. 3, at the
Jewish Community Center in West
Bloomfield. The program is free and
open to the public.
Participants will study with two
rabbis during the Tor-ah-thon. Rabbis
will be randomly placed throughout
Handleman Hall, inside the JCC. The
first hour of study will explore the last
chapter of Deuteronomy. Each rabbi

A Holiday Sound
Congregation Shir Tikvah of Troy will
offer Dial-a-Shofar during the Jewish
High Holiday season, from mid-
September to mid-October.
The special phone service will allow
homebound individuals, older adults,
people with disabilities and others
who cannot come to Rosh Hashanah
or Yom Kippur services to partake
in the religious duty of hearing the
sounds of the shofar.
Dial-a-Shofar can be reached
at (248) 649-4418, ext. 302. Shir
Tikvah's spiritual leader, Rabbi Arnie
Sleutelberg, calls out the notes, which
