Synagogue "stars" give voice to
Jewish composers in JHAS concert.

Bill Carroll
Special to the Jewish News

T

hree of the Metro Detroit
area's top Jewish vocalists
will perform in concert
as the main entertainment for the
Jewish Home & Aging Services' 100th
anniversary celebration at the Detroit
Opera House on Sunday, Sept. 30.
Cantors Meir Finkelstein of
Congregation Shaarey Zedek of
Oakland County and Michael Smolash
of Temple Israel and Cantorial Soloist
Rachel Gottlieb of Temple Beth El,
singing together for the first time, will
perform in "Three Cantors Plus One,"
a musical tribute to Jewish compos-
ers including Irving Berlin, Jerome
Kern, Richard Rodgers and Leonard
Bernstein.
"The opera house is a great venue
for our centennial celebration, and
music by Jewish composers is perfect
entertainment for the evening," said
Carol Rosenberg, JHAS executive
director, who will be honored at the
event for her 27 years of service to the
organization. "The concert promises to
be the highlight of the evening. That
alone will make it worthwhile to take a
trip downtown."
Rosenberg, who has a performing
arts background, would not disclose
the identity of the "one" in the title;
however, she may join the singers for a
musical number.
But a star of Michigan Opera
Theatre's upcoming production of
Cyrano definitely will make a guest
appearance, singing an operatic aria.
Cyrano, with music by MOT Managing
Director David DiChiera and libretto
by Jewish director Bernard Uzan, will
have its international premiere at the

opera house on Oct. 13.
"Oscar Hammerstein gives us a
wide range of songs because he col-
laborated with both Jerome Kern
and Richard Rodgers," said Cantor
Finkelstein. "And, of course, Leonard
Bernstein composed the music for
West Side Story. We'll also do a medley
from Fiddler on the Roof, with music
by Jerry Bock and lyrics by Sheldon
Harnick."
Barbara Frankel of West Bloomfield,
who serves on both the JHAS and
MOT boards, arranged for the concert.
The Sept. 30 dinner preceding the
concert, catered by Paul Kohn Quality
Kosher Catering, will be served on
tables sitting on platforms placed over
the opera house seats. A beverage
reception, accompanied by interna-
tional food stations, will be sponsored
by JHAS Past President Paul Borman
of Bloomfield Hills. A video depicting
100 years of JHAS is being prepared
by Fran Victor and Bill Harder of
Evolution Media and is sponsored by
the Fleischman family in memory of
Edward I. and Freda Fleischman. F1

The 100th anniversary celebra-
tion of Jewish Home & Aging
Services will begin at 5:30 p.m.
Sunday, Sept. 30, at the Detroit
Opera House, 1526 Broadway,
in downtown Detroit. Cost is
$180 per person. Under the
JHAS Acts of Loving Kindness
Gimelut Chasadim program, sup-
porters can buy Mitzvah Maker
packages, ranging from $1,400
to $36,000, which include two
tickets to the celebration. For
further information, call Beth
Tryon, (248) 661-2999.
