Jewish requires effort, dedication,
and often, sacrifice. To that end, it is
incumbent upon parents, rabbis and
Jewish leaders to take the bold move
and to champion the cause of full-time
day school Jewish education. There is
no better tool that we have to perpetu-
ate our religion than that of educat-
ing our children about the depth and
beauty of Judaism.
When we, at best, only provide our
children a few hours a week of formal
Jewish education, a summer camp
experience or a trip to Israel, but the
rest of the time our children are in
schools with no Jewish education, our
children learn very quickly what is a
priority and what, sadly, is not.
Jewish day schools do a wonderful
job providing our children the tools
to become knowledgeable, proud Jews
and well-rounded members of the
greater society. Their graduates are
accepted into the best universities and
enter prominent professional fields.
The only real obstacle, unfortunately, to
providing every Jewish child with a day
school education is the high tuition
cost. Teacher and employee salaries
and benefits, maintained facilities,
utilities and extracurricular activities
and programs all come at a high cost.
As a community, we owe it to our
future, that no child loses the oppor-
tunity to such an education because of
financial constraints. Parents will and
must make difficult financial cutbacks
to provide their children with a Jewish
day school education. At the same
time, however, our community must
not rest until we resolve how to assist
parents who lack the funds.
While it is praiseworthy that so
many dollars from Jewish sources go to
hospitals, universities, cultural centers
and other deserving causes, we must
not lose sight of our communities, and
the Jewish people's, immediate needs.
Our local Federation has established
a $50 million education trust with the
goal of being able to provide every
Jewish child in our area, an affordable
Jewish education. What a sweet new
year it would be if the generous mem-
bers of our community would donate
the funds necessary to meet this goal.
When we are losing so many Jews to
assimilation, and Jewish education is
the best tool we have to fight against
it, it is unfathomable how we can not
provide the financial resources to
help this most basic and fundamental
cause. Now is the time to act. Let us
hope that we all have the courage to
respond. '
