B

y any standard,
the philan-
thropy of our
community is a cause for
celebration. Thanks to the
generosity of more than
11,000 donors, last year
the Jewish Federation
of Metropolitan Detroit
raised an unprecedented
$48 million, including
$15 million for the Israel
Emergency Fund to help give hope to
thousands of families in crisis here in
Detroit, in Israel and in Jewish com-
munities the world over.
Our Federation has done a remark-
able job — with your help and sup-
port. But our success over the past
year has not been sufficient to satisfy
our growing needs.
Our Jewish community is not
immune to the economic hardships
that face thousands of families here
in Michigan today. As we know from
the increasing requests of individu-
als who have turned to Federation's
resources for financial assistance
or services, many more families are
struggling to make ends meet than
we have means to support. And so we
must do even more.
It is not a declaration of faith when
we say, "All Jews are responsible, one
for the othet" It is a promise we must
keep. As individuals, as a community
and as a Federation family we must do
everything we can to transform chal-
lenges into opportunities to ensure that
the New Year 5768 is a sweeter year

and that "No Family Stands
Alone" in the face of adversity.
And so we ask each and
every family that is capable to
pause and reflect upon their
blessings and to join together
with our Federation, the
central address of our Jewish
community, for all that it
makes possible here in Metro
Detroit and beyond. Every gift,
no matter what size, enables us
to strengthen our Jewish community
partner agencies, answer our priorities,
caring for the youngest, the oldest and
most vulnerable among us.
Please give until it feels good.
At this time, we must also support
the needs of our brothers and sisters
in Israel; many are still reeling from
the impact of the war last year. To
demonstrate our steadfast support for
Israel at home as well as to showcase
our many achievements working
together with our Partnership 2000
Region in the Central Galilee, we plan
a yearlong celebration of Israel's 60th
anniversary in 5768. Please join us for
a series of community-wide events
that will culminate with an exciting
family mission to Israel in December
2008.
L'Shanah tovah. May the New Year
bring you, your family and all of
Israel shalom — peace, renewal and a
healthy, happy New Year. P1

No Family Stands Alone

send greetings to
those around the
world celebrating Rosh
Hashanah.
The sound of the shofar
heralds the beginning of
a new year and a time of
remembrance and renewal
for the Jewish people.
During these holy days,
men and women are called
to reflect on their faith and
to honor the blessings of
creation.
The enduring traditions of Rosh
Hashanah remind us of the deep

values of faith and family
that strengthen our nation
and help guide us each day.
As Jewish people around
the world come together to
celebrate Rosh Hashanah,
it is a chance to look to the
Jewish New Year with hope
and faith.
Laura and I send our
best wishes for a blessed
Rosh Hashanah and shanah
tovah. 11
