a possibility for Matt. He earned
history and law degrees at the
University of Michigan before
working as a real estate lawyer in
Manhattan. But he always liked the
opportunity "of working with my
father."
"I like that this is a family busi-
ness and my coming back makes it
more of an institution. It will go on
as a family business, and not just
end with my dad."
Matt includes Northern Equities
Group's 20 employees as part of
that family. In addition to proper-
ties in Michigan, NEG owns and
manages buildings in several other
states.
"When I went to New York" in
May 1999, says Matt, "I wanted to
give myself a choice. And I've never
lamented coming back to Detroit
[in February 2001]. The suburbs
here are some of the best in the
country. They are very livable."
He says that people living in sub-
urban Chicago and in New York's
Long Island suburbs rarely go
downtown. In Detroit, downtown
is making a comeback "and I hope
it continues. I live in the suburbs
[Franklin] and I enjoy downtown."
Matt recently was named
president of the company and
will handle project management,
construction, leasing and property
management. His father, says Matt,
"is not stepping back. He's stepping
up" to do long-range planning for
the firm.
After returning from New York,
Matt made another "acquisition"
— he met and married another
real estate professional. Wife Julie
(Leib) is a broker with Real Estate
One. The two are expecting their
first child in December.
The couple are supporters of the
Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit and Farmington Hills-
based JARC.

ber him from Yentl or The
Princess Bride or even as
the star of the current CBS
