and the audience she said. "He signed
pictures for all of us and chit-chatted.
I was really fortunate to have that one-
on-one time with him. He was a great
one and will be sorely missed."
Pavarotti always took a long, lei-
surely lunch which he called the most
important meal of the day. He wasn't
picky about restaurants, but ate volu-
minous amounts of food.
I spent so much time with him that
he started calling me "Mr. Fords." After
one concert, I arranged for individual
photos to be taken with him and each
Big Three auto manufacturer CEO at
a Cobo Hall reception. When he posed
with then-Ford CEO Harold A. (Red)
Poling, Pavarotti yelled out to me,
"Come on, Mr. Fords, get in the pic-
ture." Wisely, I declined.

His first wife never made it to
Detroit. His second wife, Nicoletta
Montavani, his former secretary, was
too nervous to actually watch him
perform. When he started to sing on
stage, she always looked down until he
finished.
One of the premier musical events
in Detroit's history was the Three
Tenors concert July 17, 1999, before
an almost sold-out crowd at Tiger
Stadium, in which Pavarotti per-
formed with Placido Domingo and
Jose Carreras. "We had so much fun,
we almost forgot we were perform-
ing in front of an audience quipped
Pavarotti backstage afterward. "Now,
Mr. Fords, let's go to dinner" II
