alternative meditations, including
essays, poems and new rituals. There's
much good and inspiring writing
here; included are the voices of Rachel
Adler, S.Y. Agnon, Rabbi Shlomo
Carlebach, Rabbi Jill Hammer, Rabbi
Abraham Joshua Heschel, Rav Kook,
Elie Wiesel and others. The author is
the rabbi and director of Jewish stud-
ies and Hebrew at the Levine Academy
in Dallas, Texas.
Rabbi Abraham J. Twerski, a psy-
chiatrist with a long career of helping
others through his counseling, lectures
and many books, believes strongly in
the individual's potential to change
and grow. His newest book, Happiness
and the Human Spirit: The
Spirituality of Becoming the Best
You Can Be (Jewish Lights), makes for
timely reading in this period of intro-
spection. For Rabbi Twerski, spiritual-
ity is something not accessible to the
five senses, yet integral to the whole-
ness of the individual. Making clear
that spirituality and religiosity are not
the same thing, he demonstrates that
spirituality is a key to happiness and
that every individual can be spiritual
by being the best person he or she
can be — and that happiness lies
in becoming better, not trying to be
perfect.
Writing with compassion and
insight, he uses examples and personal
stories drawn from his distinguished
career as the founder and medical
director of Gateway Rehabilitation
Center (now emeritus).
"To be truly happy, we need to be con-
tinually in the process of exercising
and implementing the elements of the
human spirit to the best of our abili-
ties:' he writes, while sharing "10 Steps
to Happiness!'
Healing and the Jewish
Imagination: Spiritual and Practical
Perspectives on Judaism and Health,
edited by Rabbi William Cutter
(Jewish Lights), is a collection of
provocative essays delving into the
relationship between classical Jewish
texts and contemporary health issues,
linking body, mind and spirit.
Contributors are a group of schol-
ars, activists, rabbis, teachers and
artists who are not directly involved
in health care, but deeply inter-

ested in the human dimensions. They
include Rachel Adler, Arnold Eisen,
Eitan Fishbane, Rabbi Arthur Green,
Rabbi David Ruderman and Albert
J. Winn. Rabbi Cutter is director of
the Kalsman Institute on Judaism
and Health at Hebrew Union College-
Jewish Institute of Religion.
Gift of Soul, Gift of Wisdom: A
Spiritual Resource for Mentoring
and Leadership by Rabbi Bradley
Shavit Artson (Behrman House)
is an uncommon spiritual how-to
book. Rabbi Artson guides readers to
becoming mentors for others, learn-
ing to enrich others through sharing
authentic experience, knowledge and a
sense of holiness. Rabbi Artson is the
dean of the Ziegler School of Rabbinic
Studies and vice president of the
University of Judaism in Los Angeles.
The Los Angeles-based singer,
songwriter, performer and music
producer Craig Taubman has put
together a collection of brief essays,
meditations and poems on the theme
of hope and healing, Jewels of Elul
III (Craig 'n Co./American Committee
for Shaare Zedek Medical Center in
Jerusalem), emphasizing the possibili-
ties for change and growth and hope.
The pieces in this third edition are
available online, in a daily version or
in a small pocket edition — compact
enough to fit into a tallit bag.
The 29 contributors include Rabbi
Harold Kushner, Matisyahu, Dr. Jerome
Groopman, Anita Diamant and Rabbi
David Wolpe. Free copies are available
at jewelsofelul.com or (800) 707-9250.
Tamar Ansh combines the mysti-
cal and the practical in A Taste of
Challah: A Comprehensive Guide
to Challah and Bread Baking
(Feldheim). Illustrated with full-
color photographs that highlight the
finished breads as well as the step-
by-step directions, the book includes
recipes for woven and braided round
challahs for the holidays, symbolizing
the cyclical nature of the year and
eternity of life.
Following tradition, Ansh, who lives
in Jerusalem, adds sugar, raisins and
a sprinkle of cinnamon to her challah
at this time of year, making her home
fragrant with sweetness and freshly
baked bread. I 1
