Better Access
To improve accessibility for people
with certain medical conditions,
including Crohn's disease and ulcer-
ative colitis, the Michigan House
Commerce Committee passed unani-
mously legislation that would make
employee restrooms at retail busi-
nesses available to customers.
The Restroom Access Act, HB 5046,
would allow a customer seeking use of
an employee restroom facility access
if suffering from an eligible medical
condition and can display proper noti-
fication or uses an ostomy device. The
act provides immunity from liability
for business owners permitting such
employee restroom access.
"This legislation is designed to help
those Michigan residents who are
afflicted with digestive diseases, but
it will also help the state's local busi-
nesses who lose out to these custom-
ers who do all of their shopping on the
Internet from home due to the lack
of facilities available," said State Rep.
Andy Meisner, D-Ferndale, chair of
the House Commerce Committee.
The Restroom Access Act ensures
that current employee-only restrooms
do not need to be modified to accom-
modate public guests who may require
its use. The bills have been endorsed
by the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation
of America, the American Foundation
for Urologic Disease and the Michigan
Retailers Association.

Shalom Synagogue, 29901 Middlebelt,

enue, which accounts for a major
portion of Yad Ezra's annual budget, is
used to purchase nutritious groceries
for the organization's client families.

care items and household cleaning
supplies to approximately 2,500 indi-
viduals every month. Since January of
this year, 174 new families have come
to Yad Ezra seeking assistance.
Yad Ezra, an independent agency, is
supported by the Metropolitan Detroit

more than 800,000 pounds of grocer-
ies to impoverished families.
