May You Be Inscribed and Sealed
As we approach the New Year, heeding the call of the shofar and striving to
be inscribed in the Book of Life, together let us do everything in our power to
repair the world. May this be the year Hadassah doctors and nurses save the
life of a child who goes on to find a cure for cancer. May this be the year we
will educate a child who one day will lead Israel, at last, to peace.
Let your love of Israel and the Jewish people
inspire you to build a better tomorrow!
Become a part of Hadassah's extraordinary work.
Hadassah.
We're not waiting for the future. We're building it.
Come build with Hadassah.

ne-third of cancer deaths
can be avoided by taking
simple steps, including
eating right.
A healthy diet and the amount
one eats and drinks is important.
Being overweight increases one's
risk for developing many cancers,
including breast cancer among
post-menopausal women, as well as
cancers of the colon, endometrium,
esophagus and kidney.
According to the American
Cancer Society's Guidelines on
Nutrition and Physical Activity for
Cancer Prevention, the most impor-
tant way to reduce cancer risk —
aside from quitting smoking — is
to maintain a healthy weight.
The guidelines also recommend
a healthy diet that emphasizes plant
foods. This includes:
• Eating five or more servings of
a variety of vegetables and fruits
each day.
• Choosing whole grains in
preference to processed (refined)
grains.
• Limiting consumption of pro-
cessed and red meats.
The American Cancer Society's
Great American Eat Right
Challenge Web site,
www.cancer.org/greatamericans,
provides tips and tools to help peo-
ple toward better health through
diet and habits like portion control.
In addition to information about
how to fit more nutrient-packed
fruits, vegetables and whole grains
into each day, the site features a
healthy eating quiz, calorie calcula-
tor and healthy recipes.
Visitors can also check their
body mass index (BMI) to deter-
mine whether or not they are at a
healthy weight and can get some
practical tips for achieving and
maintaining a healthy weight.
People without online access can
call the American Cancer Society's
toll-free number, 800-ACS-2345, to
receive information on nutrition
and physical activity and the Great
