DANCE CELEBRATION: The celebration of Mexican Independence Day can
be felt in Detroit with the appearance of the Ballet Folklorico de Mexico on the
holiday weekend. There will be two shows — 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, and 2 p.m.
Sunday, Sept. 16 — at the Detroit Opera House, 1526 Broadway. Sixty-five dancers
and musicians will perform choreography that reaches from pre-Hispanic to mod-
em times. Backdrops feature authentic scenes from south of the border, including
a Mexican plaza and a tropical expanse. Keeping with the holiday theme, mariachi
bands will entertain guests before each performance, and there will be authentic
Hispanic foods in the Cadillac Cafe. $28-$75. (313) 237-7464.

TRENDY TRESSES: Performance art put-
ting hairdos in the spotlight benefits the Juvenile
Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) when the
Real Big Hair Ball takes the stage 7 p.m. Sunday,
Sept. 30, at the Royal Oak Music Theater, 318
W. Fourth, in Royal Oak. The avant-garde entertainment, planned by local salons, features
creative fusions of hair, makeup and choreography. The Real Big Hair Ball started in 1986,
when Norman Wagner, owner of the London Calling Salon, was asked to provide the
entertainment before a fashion show. The connection to the fight against diabetes launched
in 2003 because two London Calling stylists had children with the disease. This year, the
show will tour to other cities in other states. Each ticket, priced between $20 and $30, will
have $5 set aside for the JDRF. The event is open to those 18 and older. (586) 778-6379.
