NW8 BIONV A8 OlOHd editor's note A Fresh Start For A New Year Let us raise our honey-dipped apple slices and look toward a sweet new year. Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, is a time for introspection and making changes for a better life. At Platinum, we took that initiative seriously. Beginning with this September issue, you'll see a lot of changes in our pages, beginning with the actual paper you hold in your hands. In an effort to perpetuate a more environmentally responsible ideology, we've traded in our glossy paper in exchange for a more Earth-friendly paper stock, printed with a soy-based ink. To enhance this fresh start, you'll see new additions throughout the year. We're constantly tweaking our design to make it as reader friendly and compelling as can be. We have a list of new departments at the ready to add in the upcoming months. And we've made Platinum even easier to find, increas- ing our pick-up locations to 120 spots around Metro Detroit. At its heart, though, Platinum's mission remains the same: to provide a place for members of the Jewish and Metro Detroit community to come to relax, be informed, find familiar faces and make the most of life. In this issue, for example, we show what's hot in fall fashion: See how to pump up the volume in the little black dress in "Back in Black" (page 19), what the most gorgeous trends of the moment are in "The Goods" (page 16) and where to find a lush tropical paradise to shop for it all "Shop With A View" (page 26). And finally, we celebrate the finale of the High Holy Days with a Simchat Torah feast (see "A Harvest Brunch" on page 30), prepared by local chef and contributor Annabel Cohen. Let us raise our honey-dipped apple slices and look toward a sweet new year. Above: A toffee-coated apple-on-a-stick becomes a luscious symbol of the new year at our Simchat Torah brunch.
