PACT – Ensuring Wellness
Clover Hill Park Cemetery
Yael of Netanya says her daughter Danit, almost 2, has progressed more rap-
idly and independently than her other children thanks to PACT (Parents and
Children Together) programs offered at her local well-baby clinic. Yael's family
is among the 13,000 Ethiopian Israelis living in Netanya who benefit from the
program tailored to the unique needs of this cultural group. The American
Jewish Joint Distribution Committee operates the program in 14 cities.
Netanya's program is supported by the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit and the Jewish Women's Foundation of Detroit.
whole region.
What emerged was a partner-
ship with the Rashi Foundation,
the Ministry of Education and the
Detroit federation, which gave a total
of $380,000 for a pilot program that
would provide more teachers, teacher
training, smaller classes and more
individual attention.
The program began in January
for grades 5-8; this included all 26
elementary schools in the region.
"Pupils got so much from the pro-
gram:' Lavi said. "They are a lot more
confident, with a higher self-esteem.
They feel more successful."
Parents are delighted because they

think English is important for the
future of their children.
"If they don't read in fifth- or
sixth-grade, they have no future
— suddenly they can: said Mickey
Landau, a teacher and counselor in
Migdal HaEmek. "I am amazed by the
effort from teachers, the federation
and Rashi to close the gap. In a few
months, they feel successful at speak-
ing and reading English. They under-
stand they are not stupid."
Brainstorming and training contin-
ues. Next on the table is a plan to bring
eighth-graders from Detroit to work
in a summer camp and help kids with
their English. II

Answering Israel's Critics
The Charge
Iranian leader Ahmadinejad continued last week with the latest in a long his-
tory of anti-Israel rantings — charging that Israel is the standard bearer of
Satan, that Israel lies about being faithful to Judaism and that Israel infiltrates
the world to foment wars.

Contrary to Ahmadinejad's rantings, the reality of Israel is that it is a nation com-
mitted to being a light unto the nations, a light of peace and a good world citizen.
