srael "Izzy" Liebowitz, 90, for-
mer Detroiter of Boca Raton,
Ha., died Aug. 23, 2007.
He was born on May 5,1917, in the
Russian region between the cities of
Minsk and Pinsk. In 1929, he and the
rest of his family stepped off a Baltic
American Line steamship in New
York City to live in Hazelton, Pa.
After attending Hazelton High
School, he attended a rabbinical
school in Cleveland for a year. In
1941, Mr. Liebowitz was drafted into
the U.S. Army's Second Infantry
Division. Before he was sent into
active combat, his first visit to
Detroit was as a soldier to help
restore peace during the 1943 riots.
On June 8,1944, referred to
D-Day Plus 2, he landed on the
beaches of Normandy. Later that
year, while clearing a minefield
before the start of the Battle of the
Bulge, he was wounded by a mine.
He was awarded the Purple Heart.
After being disabled for six weeks,
he rejoined his platoon only to find
that many of his friends were killed
in the battles. He received a second
Purple Heart from another injury
when a shell landed near him while
he was on guard duty.
After Mr. Liebowitz was dis-
charged from the Army in 1945, he
married Norma from Bronx, N.Y., on
March 31,1946.
In 1946, he and his wife moved
to Detroit and he entered into a
partnership with his brother-in-
law, Harold Shapiro. They opened
Woodland Service, a Standard
Oil affiliated gas station at the
southeast corner of Woodward and
Woodland in Detroit. A few years
later, they opened Webb-Wood
Collision across Woodward. Mr.
Liebowitz ran the service station,
a 24-hour-a-day operation, while
brother-in-law Harold managed
the collision shop; wife Norma and
sister Molly Shapiro, Harold's wife,
handled the bookkeeping.
Family and gasoline mixed so well,
in the following years the partner-
ship opened other service stations
in Metro Detroit.
Glenn Liebowitz, Mr. Liebowitz's
second son and president of GCC
