Rabbi Hershel Klainberg
devoted his
career to teaching Torah to children and serving
as a chaplain before joining the Jewish Hospice
and Chaplaincy Network staff. Much has changed
since he became a hospice caregiver five years ago.
"Instead of teaching others, I am becoming the
student by watching my patients show love,
respect, dignity and devotion toward their loved
ones as they face the end of their lives," Rabbi
Klainberg said. "Teaching was meaningful, but
this is more rewarding."

RICHARD HEAVENRICH, 91,
of Southfield, died Aug. 20, 2007. A
former faculty member at Cranbrook
School in Bloomfield Hills, he had
resided at the Trowbridge center for
assisted living in Southfield.
A native of Detroit, Mr. Heavenrich
was born April 11, 1916, to John and
Marian Heavenrich. He graduated
from Cranbrook School in 1933 and
Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania
in 1937. Shortly before Pearl Harbor,
he enlisted in the U.S. Army and
was assigned to a field artillery unit
which engaged the Japanese army in
its attempt to capture the Aleutian
Islands. Later, he was promoted to
captain and fought in and helped
recapture the Philippine Islands in the
Pacific theater of war.
After World War II, he earned
a master's degree at the Harvard
Graduate School of Education, then
taught in the public schools of Quincy

Cranbrook as a math teacher in 1955.
Ben Snyder, former assistant head-
master and director of special pro-
grams at Cranbrook, said, "Richard
was known as a teacher who placed no
limits on time, energy or dedication in
solving a student's academic or per-
sonal problems. His love and under-
standing of mathematics enriched the
lives of countless Cranbrook students
in need of his help."
Mr. Heavenrich retired in 1976 to
assist his brother, Walter, with man-
agement of Whaling's Men's Wear in
Detroit. He was an active member of
Temple Emanu-El.
