MICHIGAN STATE FAIR
The holiday weekend winds down the
Michigan State Fair. Band Shell enter-
tainment, starting at 8 p.m., includes
the Colgate Country Showdown with
Justine Blazer on Friday, Aug. 31;
You Can Be a Star Karaoke Finals on
Saturday, Sept. 1; Tommy Steele and the
Steele Canyon Band on Sunday, Sept. 2;
and Alice Cooper on Monday, Sept. 3.
Armed Services Day, on Sept. 2,
honors past and present military
members, who get into the fair for free
on Sunday.
Continuing through the holiday are
the usual animal displays and activi-
ties, carnival rides, art show and con-
tests ranging from farm products to
dancing. Foods, including those made
to show and those made to enjoy, fill
the Detroit fairgrounds 10 a.m.-10
p.m. through Labor Day at Woodward
and Eight Mile.

MICHIGAN PEACH
FESTIVAL
Visitors to the Michigan Peach Festival
can pick the celebrated fruit at local
orchards, eat it in pies and ice cream
and even compete in a peach bakeoff,
all part of the activities planned Aug.
30-Sept. 3 in Romeo.
The event, which is concentrated
in an area bordered by 31 Mile, 33
Mile, Powell and Campground roads,
mixes in peaches with traditional fes-
tival activities: music, arts and crafts,

carnival rides, car show and
planned walks.
The country tone is fur-
thered with parades and fun
contests, such as bed racing.
There even is a used book
sale. Amid all the peaches are
plenty of other wholesome
and fun foods.
Core hours are 5-11 p.m.

p.m. other days, with many
activities in specific time

DETROIT BELLE ISLE
GRAND PRIX
The Belle Isle roads that comprise the
race track have been upgraded for the
cars racing in the American Le Mans
Series and the IndyCar Series of the
Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix.
Gates open at 8 a.m. Friday, Aug.
31, for a day of practice that ends at
5:20 p.m., followed by a Happy Hour
that goes to 7 p.m. The competitive
events take place 7:45 a.m.-7:15 p.m.
Saturday, Sept. 1, and 9 a.m.-7:15 p.m.
Sunday, Sept. 2, both days closing with
a brief concert.

races included and the age of ticket
