Fabulous Films
This year's Toronto International Film
Festival — the largest public film fes-
tival in the world — is set to run Sept.
6-15 in the Canadian city a mere four-
hour drive from Detroit.
As always, Jewish actors and direc-
tors will be well represented. Here is
just a taste of what is in store for mov-
iegoers who cross the border.
On the acting side, Sydney Pollack
plays a shady corporate law-firm co-
founder who directs the dirty work of
his star employee (George Clooney) in
Michael Clayton. Jake Gyllenhaal and
Adam Arkin star in the international
thriller with a Mid-eastern twist,
Rendition, while Joaquin Phoenix and
Jennifer Connelly take the leads in
Reservation Road, a tale about the lure

of revenge and the power of redemp-
tion.
North American directors screen-
ing new films include Woody Allen
(Cassandra's Dream), Noah Baumbach
(Margo at the Wedding), Joel and
Ethan Coen (No Country for Old
Men), Jason Reitman (Juno), Julie
Taymor (Across the Universe), David
Cronenberg (Eastern Promises) and
Amir Bar-Lev (My Kid Could Paint
That). Jeremy Podeswa's Fugitive
Pieces, based on the award-winning
bestseller by Anne Michaels, is about
Jakob, a Jewish-Polish boy who wit-
nesses the massacre of his family in
World War II; it opens the festival.
Offerings by Israeli directors include
Amos Gitai's Disengagement and
Shira Geffen and Etgar Keret's Jellyfish
(Meduzot).

According to the Boston Herald,

Meanwhile, catty reporters are get-
ting on Laurie's case, claiming the
"greener-than-thou" Laurie usually
travels to and from the Vineyard
on a private jet.

All About Joan
Comedian Joan Rivers, 74, is try-

ing out an autobiographical play in
which she plays - herself. Called
The Joan Rivers Theater Workshop,
the show is now running in San
Francisco. It includes stories - both
funny and tragic - about her life,
including the suicide of Edgar

Rosenberg, her
husband and man-
ager.
Rivers asks for
audience input
after each per-
formance, with
an eye toward
Joan Rivers
honing the show
and bringing it
to Broadway. The comedian spent
four years writing the play, assisted
by two co-writers. To her credit,
Rivers makes fun of herself and
shows some insight into her harsh
persona.
She told the San Francisco
Chronicle she had to change her
personality to succeed:
"A woman in our business has to
be a bitch if [she] wants to defeat
[the network executives]. Please
and thank you are taken as signs
of weakness. A woman needs a
champion. I never had a champion.
I learned to become my own, even
though yelling at my agent on the
phone made me so uncomfortable
that when I hung up, I cried."
