P4° v.,., 1297390 Maccabi swim team poses after returning to Detroit. American Idol or Maccabi swimmers get to meet a Jewish American hero. Steve Stein Special to The Jewish News S wimmers at the JCC Maccabi Games in Houston got an unexpected treat. They met a Jewish swimmer whose storied Olympic record may never be broken. Mark Spitz, who was at the Maccabi Games to watch his son Justin play basketball for Los Angeles, made a surprise visit to the swimming venue and talked about his career. Spitz won a record seven gold medals in seven events at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich before being whisked away after 11 Israeli athletes were killed by Palestinian ter- rorists. Thirteen years later, Spitz and three children of Israeli athletes killed in Munich lit the torch at the 1985 Maccabiah Games in Israel. Now a 57-year-old stockbroker and financial adviser, Spitz also is a moti- vational speaker. He might have picked up some motivational pointers from the 10 swimmers in the Metropolitan Detroit Maccabi Club's swimming delegation in Houston. The Detroiters' poolside enthusiasm and creative cheers drew raves from opposing swimmers and coaches. "Our kids were definitely the hit of the pool. They represented Detroit well," said assistant coach Joel Elconin. Detroit swimmers earned medals in 11 events. Jason Sherbel and Leah Somerville each won three individual medals. Sherbel won the 50- and 100- meter breaststroke and he finished second in the 200 breaststroke in the boys ages 13-14 division. Somerville was third in the 100, 200 and 400 free- style in girls 15-16. Ben Duchan and Matt Devore each won two individual event medals in boys 15-16. Duchan took third in the 50 free and 100 fly, and Devore was third in the 200 and 400 free. Detroit's boys 15-16 200 freestyle relay team of Jared Unatin, David Devore, Matt Devore and Duchan finished second. Dayna Elconin, Madeline Mcllhon, Danielle Olgin and Abbie Schrier also swam for Detroit. Herb Bernstein once again coached the Detroit swimmers. Want to Bowl?
