So you can expect a lot of happy
little faces at the Jimmy Prentis Morris
Building of the Jewish Community
Center in Oak Park this fall as the JCC
updates its play area with a state-of-
the-art design and dedicates the new
Malice Torgow Toddler Playground.
In conjunction with the remodeling,
the JCC will host a Family Fun Day 1-4
p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9. The event is free,
though families are asked to bring a
kosher canned or packaged food to
be donated to Yad Ezra, the Berkley-
based kosher food bank. Family Fun
Day will be held rain or shine.
In addition to the new playgrounds,
both of which will be open for the
Family Fun Day, families can enjoy
pony rides and face painting, carnival
rides and inflatables, arts and crafts
for Rosh Hashanah and more. Kosher
snacks will be available for purchase.
"The equipment was customized
and put together especially for us;'
said JCC Assistant Executive Director
Leslee Magidson. Here is just a sam-
pling:
•A top-of-the-line, soft-but-firm
grounding imported from England
•A new swing set that includes an
easy-to-use swing especially for chil-
dren with special needs
•A spinner bowl
• Megaphones that can be heard
from one end of the playground to the
other end
• A fun pad for jumping
• A play structure that includes an
extra-sturdy net where children can
safely jump inside; a transfer sta-
tion affixed to the larger playground
equipment, allowing easy access for
children with special needs; a rope
ladder riser bridge; a balcony manip-
ulative panel; and a rock wall.
There also will be new benches for
parents; and the fence surrounding the
toddler playground has been removed,
giving the area a completely new and
open feel, Magidson says.
An anonymous donor provided
the funding for the Malke Torgow
Playground, with additional money
from the Robert P. Aronson Youth
Activity Fund and the DeRoy
Testamentary Foundation. Fundraising
by JPM participants and staff also
contributed a great deal to the work on
the new playground, Magidson says.
Elaine Schonberger is coordinator of
the Family Fun Day.
