Farm Fresh Market
Jerusalem Pizza
Staying The Course
Last week, Bobby Shrum pretty much picked up where he left off at the end of June
when the Oak Park Farmer Jack supermarket at 10 Mile and Coolidge closed, along
with the kosher meat department he managed.
Now that Farm Fresh Market has moved in, Shrum is back in business.
"Farm Fresh wanted kosher meat in the
store right from the start:' Shrum said of
the venue that opened a few weeks ago.
"They called me, and right away I called
Rabbi [Joseph] Krupnik [kashrut direc-
tor] at the Vaad. Then we made sure the
kosher meat area remained locked and
untouched so that when we reopened it
[on Aug. 23], it was still kosher."
Shrum has been a kosher butcher at
Farmer Jack stores for the past 20 years,
the last five in the Oak Park store. The new
store's kosher meat area has a full-time
kosher supervisor. Shrum, who carries a
cell phone to take call-in orders, hopes his
former clients will be back for more than
Shay Ben Yair of Oak Park and Bobby
just beef and poultry.

"The entire kosher department at Farm
Fresh has more than doubled in the amount of products in the kosher section:' said
Shrum, the store's kosher meat manager. "We also have kosher dairy items and a lot
more new deli items:'
Pizza And Beyond
It's not unusual for Brian Jacobs to simul-
taneously take phone orders, respond to
in-store customers and patiently listen to
his three preschool-aged daughters who
frequent Jerusalem Pizza in Southfield.
He's a natural at making each feel like
they have his undivided attention. And
that's because Jacobs genuinely enjoys the
work he does at the business he owns with
his wife, Rivka.
Beginning as employees of the restau-
rant, the two purchased it in January. Since Brian Jacobs prepares pizza sauce
then, they have kept much of the multi-cat- and toppings.
egory menu intact, with a few additions.
"We now have 100 percent whole wheat dough choices:' Jacobs said. "We offer it in
our calzones, pizza and Jerusalem bread."
They also serve a variety of soups, sandwiches, desserts and salads. And when it
comes to pizza, the seemingly endless — and sometimes unusual — choices include
the likes of a Coney Island pizza or one topped with cholent.
"Our most popular seem to be barbecue 'chicken, Mexican 'chicken' and Greek
pizza," said Jacobs. The "chicken" is a vegetarian substitute. "We have people who
order pizza with no sauce and others who order pizza with no cheese. And we have a
huge vegan customer base. Pretty much anything can go on a pizza. But that's what's
fun about pizza."
