West Bloomfield group opens
biodiesel plant in Adrian.

B

iofuel Industries Group LLC,
a privately owned holding
company, announced the
official opening of the NextDiesel
biodiesel facility in Adrian, 30 miles
southwest of Ann Arbor.
Two weeks ago, the 28,000-square-
foot plant held its grand opening
ceremony, which featured Gov. Jennifer
Granholm and U.S. Senators Debbie
Stabenow and Carl Levin, D-Mich.
U.S. Rep. Tim Walberg, state
Senators Cameron Brown and Gilda
Jacobs, state Rep. Dudley Spade and
Adrian Mayor Gary McDowell also
participated.
The NextDiesel biodiesel facility,
which broke ground last December
on 25 acres, is Michigan's first biodie-
sel plant to be built in a Renewable
Energy Renaissance Zone. That gives
the plant income and property tax
breaks for up to 15 years.
In addition to creating 25-35 new
jobs in the area, the NextDiesel plant
is the largest biodiesel manufacturing
facility in Michigan. Initially, it will
produce 20 million gallons per year
and has the capacity to manufacture as
much as 100 million gallons annually.
The facility features state-of-the-art
technology and will be able to produce
high-quality alternative fuel using a
variety of feedstocks that can be used
in any diesel engine and for home
heating. The plant has 24 30,000-gal-
lon tanks to hold feedstock oils or the
finished product. The site has room
for 15 railroad cars.
NextDiesel is an advanced commer-
cial B100 biodiesel fuel. It is manu-
factured using a highly automated
process that does not emit greenhouse
gases and uses only recycled water
during production.
"We are proud to create a first-
class product that is environmentally
friendly," said Terry Nosan, one of
the founders of Biofuel Industries
Group, LLC, which is based in West
Bloomfield.
"At the same time, we are also excit-
ed to help provide new jobs, markets
and opportunities in Michigan and
throughout the Midwest. The location
in Adrian was selected because of its
strong, agricultural-based community,
its easy accessibility by truck or rail

Levin later added that he hopes the
creation of this NextDiesel plant will
be "part of the American determina-
tion to be free of dependence on for-
eign oil."
Biodiesel is a clean-burning fuel
made entirely from renewable, carbon-
dioxide absorbing resources such as
vegetable oils, waste oils, greases, ani-
mal fat and soy beans.
Accepted by the Environmental
Protection Agency as a viable alterna-
tive and enhancement to petro-diesel,
biodiesel has several advantages:
• Blends are compatible with mod-
em diesel engines without mechanical
modifications or adjustments.
• It can be used in pure form (B100)
but will most likely be blended with
petroleum diesel at various concentra-
tions (B20 would mean 20 percent
biodiesel).
• Biodiesel eliminates dependency
on foreign oil. In Michigan, for exam-
ple, 1 billion gallons of diesel fuel are
used each year. By using as little as B2,
or a 2 percent blend, NextDiesel brand
would displace 20 million gallons of
foreign oil with fuel primarily grown
by farmers here.
• Biodiesel provides excellent lubri-
cation, which reduces wear and tear
on diesel engines and increases the life
of engine components.
• Biodiesel is environmentally
friendly, biodegradable, low in sulfur
emissions and non-toxic.
Last year, 1.5 million new vehicles
were sold that could use biodiesel. I I
