Inspired Message
Thank you for doing that wonderful
Editor's Letter on Aislinn Wendrow
("Aislinn's Inspiration," Aug. 16, page
5). It's truly inspiring to see stories on
young people who are attempting to
live life to its best, and who are often
met with roadblocks.
I also have a son who has autism
and uses a Lightwriter to commu-
nicate. He is a freshman student at
Syracuse University; and slowly, the
world is beginning to embrace our
children who communicate beautifully
and intelligently, albeit with a different
system, other than "voice." Kudos to
you and your article as it inspires and
encourages others!

Encouraging Words
Tali and I express our heartfelt grati-
tude for the beautiful Editor's Letter
("Aislinn's Inspiration," Aug. 23, page
5) you have written about our daugh-
ter, Aislinn. You captured her essence.
Our hope is that any other family who
has a child with challenges of any kind
will draw encouragement and inspi-
ration from reading about Aislinn's
efforts with regressive autism.
Facilitated Communication Training
is an evolving process that is tailored
to the individual using it. This is
because each individual person that
uses FC has specific neurological
challenges. It originated in Australia
by Rosemary Crossley, who has estab-
lished the DEAL Centre in Melbourne.
She began this process while trying to
elicit a means of expressive commu-
nication with a woman named Anne
McDonald, who has severe cerebral
palsy. Anne's extreme physical limita-
tions led her caregivers to believe that
she was severely cognitively impaired
and incapable of achieving anything;

Correction
In "Summer Fun:' a story about young
leaders enjoying a family day at Camp
Tamarack in Ortonville, the acreage
of Tamarack's residential camping
facility, Camp Maas, was incorrectly
reported (Aug. 16, page 34). The Camp
Maas facility is 1,500 acres.

'Oa Don't Know

else in Jewish holiday observance is it recited?

therefore, she was institutionalized
under horrific conditions. Rosemary
believed that Anne was capable of
more and began working with her
when she was 16. FC evolved out of
Rosie's perseverance in trying different
ways to facilitate Anne's communica-
tion.
Rosemary eventually created a
training manual. Then the method
was brought to this country by Dr.
Douglas Biklen, dean of the College
of Education at Syracuse University.
Dr. Sandra McClennen of Eastern
Michigan University was trained
through Syracuse University's FC
Institute and thereafter she has
been involved in training others in
Michigan.
Dr. McClennen will conduct a free
workshop with Aislinn on Sept. 15
at the Plymouth Township Library.
Anyone interested can contact Dr.
McClennen via e-mail at
sandra.mcclennen@emich.edu .
Aislinn does outreach as part of her
commitment to tikkun olam (repair of
the world).
Anne MacDonald's story is told
in a book she wrote with Rosemary
Crossley called Annie's Coming Out.
In addition, Rosemary Crossley has
written a book called Speechless, which
chronicles the journey of a number of
different people with whom she has
worked.
