The spry Southfield resident won a gold medal in the men's 90- and-older 1,500-meter racewalk at the National Senior Olympics this summer in Louisville, Ky., finishing in a Senior Olympics record 12:28. The time broke the old record by 20 seconds. Ulanoff still holds the Senior Olympics record for the men's ages 85-90 1,500 racewalk. The record is 10:58, set in 2003 in Virginia Beach, Va. A former postal worker, Ulanoff delivered some outstanding per- formances in Louisville. He also won the 5,000 racewalk and earned ribbons for top-eight finishes in the 100, 200 and 400 dashes. "I tried to set the record in the 5,000, but that was my last event and I was just too tired;'Ulanoff said. He competed in the Michigan Senior Olympics this month in Rochester Hills, and won six gold medals in racewalking, running and tennis. Racewalking is Ulanoff's favor- ite sports activity. "I really enjoy it because it doesn't put as much stress on you as running:' said Ulanoff, who has been racewalking to stay active for 25 years. Please send sports news to sports@thejewishnews.com.
