doesn't matter. The expe-
rience is all that counts.

Bloomfield had one of those
moments last month when he
participated in the Lightning
International Masters
Championship sailboat competi-
tion in Athens, Greece.
Hosted by the Yacht Club of
Greece, which lists Greek royalty
among its former admirals, the
championship was held in Phaleron
Bay in the Saronic Gulf, site of the
2004 Olympic sailing events.
Finsilver and his fellow sailors in
the 19-foot, three-person Lightning
boats could see the historic
Acropolis and Parthenon from the
racecourse. "That was a glorious
sight:' said Finsilver, who competed
in the championship specifically
because it was held in Greece.
The sailing conditions were chal-
lenging, unlike anything Finsilver
had ever encountered. The winds
and seas were unstable and unpre-
dictable.
It was common for the winds
to suddenly shift 180 degrees.
One race was stopped because the
winds were blowing the boats in
different directions.
In order to compete, a skipper
needed to be at least age 55 by Dec.
31 and the minimum combined
age for the skipper and two-person
crew had to be 130 years.
Finsilver is 61. Crewmember
Larry Brown of Boston is 57.
