Dear
Barb, n you
explain the fol-
lowing terms:
Alternative,
Complemen-
tary, Ayurvedic, Integrative, and
Naturopathic Medicines? Estelle.

nswer: Dear Estelle, OK,
I'll take a crack at it. Let
_L M me start by saying that
these terms sometimes overlap and
are often defined/used imprecisely.
Having offered that caveat, here
are my best definitions:
• Alternative Medicine:
Various ways of healing or
treating disease that are
considered outside the
mainstream of convention-
al western medicine;
• Complementary
Medicine: Practices or
procedures of Alterna-
tive Medicine that are
accepted and/or widely
utilized by conventional
medicine;
• Ayurvedic Medicine (also
known as Ayurveda): An ancient
(alternative) system of health
care native to India that focuses
on diet and treating the "whole"
person;
• Integrative Medicine: An inte-
gration of mainstream medical/
scientific therapies and alterna-
tive treatments that address the,
"body, mind, and soul";
• Naturopathic Medicine (also
known as Naturopathy): A medi-
cal philosophy that focuses on
assisting the body's own recuper-
ative abilities. I hope this helps
answer your question.
