New Chorus Michigan Opera Theatre is in the pro- cess of forming a brand-new perform- ing ensemble: the Michigan Opera Theatre Children's Chorus. Led by MOT Chorus Master Suzanne Mallare Acton, this permanent children's choir will be the first of its kind for Metro Detroit children. Accepting children ages 10-16 by audition, the choir will perform as a separate ensemble and with international opera stars in MOT productions. A grant from the Mandell L. and Madeleine H. Berman Foundation is providing the startup funding neces- sary to form the ensemble. Child performers with the Michigan Opera Theatre who have gone on to professional careers include Sutton Foster, a previous ad hoc MOT chorus member who found Broadway stardom as the Tony Award-winning star of Thoroughly Modern Millie; Jonathan B. Wright, a performer in the 2003 MOT production of Dead Man Walking, who is now on Broadway in the Tony-win- ning Spring Awakening; and Broadway producer Jeffrey Seller, who performed in the 1977 MOT production of Carmen and won Tony Awards for Rent and Avenue Q. Auditions for the Children's Chorus are under way through August. The ensemble will rehearse and per- form at the Detroit Opera House from September through next June.
