Camile Schwanki, 4, of Royal Oak, Fran Wolf of West Bloomfield and Jonah
Lipman, 4, of Farmington Hills have fun in class.

always have a tangible project they can
make, like a fish kite for China." With
an interest in art, Phillips has also
been a long-time docent at the Detroit
Institute of Arts.
Snack time includes a treat tied to
the theme.

On The Move
After outgrowing the Phillips' base-
ment, the partners rented space
at Congregation Shaarey Zedek in
Southfield, where Phillips is a member,
offering one of the first pre-school
enrichment programs.
Next they bought a building and built
a second one next door. In one, Wolf
ran a day care center for children
from 6 weeks to 2 years; in the other,
Phillips continued Images for the
older kids.
"One day, someone knocked on the
door and wanted to buy the day care:'
Phillips said. "We sold the property
and the day care, but didn't sell Images
or its idea. For a while, we thought we
were going to retire. That was about
nine years ago."
They did take a short break, and
Marion took the program to two
downtown schools, volunteering her
time and materials with underprivi-
leged children.
Wolf spent the time working in an
established enrichment program. "But
parents kept asking where Images was,
so we brought it back:' she said.
For the past five years, they have
rented space at Temple Kol Ami
in West Bloomfield. Beginning in
the fall, they will run Images from
Congregation Beth Ahm in West
Bloomfield. Joining them will be
Laura Gonzalez, who has worked as an
Images assistant teacher for six years.
Their success has led Phillips and

Wolf to create franchise opportunities.
"We would love Images to be able to
touch many more children," Wolf said.
"It would be wonderful for children
who live farther away to be able to
experience it:"
There is talk of creating a DVD or
book relating to their program.
Phillips bumps into former students
frequently. "I see kids who are grown
up who remember being an astronaut
or building an aquarium" at Images,
she said. Parents, too, have fond mem-
ories of the class.
"It was incredibly innovative in
terms of creating imaginative play that
is hard to fincr said Michele Bleznak
of Bloomfield Hills, whose three chil-
dren attended the program years ago.
"It is a great alternative to pro-
grammed play in a traditional sense.
Even though it is structured, the kids
felt they came up with the ideas."
Blau especially liked that the class
continued after the kids came home.
"They always brought a little newslet-
ter and a project about what they did
in class," she said. "It prompted them
to talk about it more."
With youngsters coming from as far
as Rochester and Milford, Phillips and
Wolf have influenced a lot of children
over the years and have had lots of fun.
'After 20 years, we still enjoy our-
selves tremendously and laugh a lot:'
Phillips said. "I believe that definitely
goes to the kids."
