Dear
a
Bar
vegetarian and
am often told
that a vegetar-
ian diet is not
healthy. What's the scoop? Mindy.
A
nswer: Dear Mindy, Let's
start by clarifying some
terms that often confuse
people. Strict vegetarians (often
called "vegans") do not consume
animal products of any kind. Some
not-as-strict vegetarians allow for
dairy products and eggs in their
diet.
As with most issues, there are
always two sides to the argu-
ment. We're constantly
being told that, in most
instances, eating more
fruits and vegetables is a
healthy thing (true), which
can provide natural de-
fenses to a wide range of
maladies ranging from
cancer to heart disease.
On the other hand,
critics maintain that a
poorly planned vegetar-
ian diet can be deficient in
various nutrients (also true),
such as protein, iron, zinc, vitamin
B12, calcium, omega-3 fatty acids,
retinol (vitamin A), vitamin D,
riboflavin (vitamin B2) and iodine.
Vegans may have particularly low
intake of B12 and calcium.
So, what's the answer? As with
most things, becoming knowledge-
able about the subject and being
mindful of what you eat is impor-
tant. A qualified nutritionist/dieti-
tian can certainly help.
