He was an original member of the 1960s Motown group the Valadiers. The word valadier in Latin means "strong man," and what a strong man he was. His battle with bladder cancer for the past two and half years did not ever keep him down. He was audi- tioned by Smokey Robinson and signed by Berry Gordy in 1961. Mr. Light and the doo-wop quar- tet, Motown's first Jerry Light white singing group, toured with acts including Diana Ross and the Supremes and the Temptations. The singing career was short lived but long remembered. Mr. Light owned and operated a refin- ing company for precious metals for more than 30 years.
