Ask The Orthodontist
I frequently get asked about "Cross bites." Cross-bite
is an improper overlap of the upper teeth to the lower
teeth. There are anterior (involving the front teeth)
cross-bites and posterior (involving the back teeth) cross-
bites. In this article we will focus on posterior cross-bites.

A posterior cross-bite is most frequent when the back
upper teeth are on the inside of the lower teeth. This can
cause problems such as too narrow a palate for speech,
improper biting relationship which potentially can lead to
jaw joint problems (TMD), insufficient room for teeth to
erupt and subsequent crowding due to smaller size of the
dental arch, and a cosmetic issue due to a narrowness of
the face and smile.

The cross-bite is easily corrected by an orthodontist so long as the patient is
still growing and the palate has not fused, meaning the bones of the palate
having merged together. The correction involves a palate expander and is most
commonly done between the ages of 8 1/2 and 13 1/2 . Determining the best age
for correction involves many options and is best discussed with an orthodon-
tic specialist. In our office, as many orthodontists have concurred, the most
reliable correction is with a fixed or non-removable appliance due to greater
control by the parent and orthodontist. Choice of appliance is on an individual
basis and best determined after consultation.
Parents with any orthodontic concerns for their child should consult an ortho-
dontist concerning the need for orthodontic treatment. As a dental specialist,
an orthodontist has elected to limit his practice to this specific area or expertise
and has received additional training by an accredited dental school for ad-
vanced education.
Our office is located on the border of West Bloomfield/Commerce Township
2300 Haggerty Road, Suite 1160, 248-926-4100.
