What a Jewish Sunday School Can Be... munication, cell phones often have been called "the world's longest umbilical cord." Brown explains that when some students don't know how to deal with their conflicts, they simply take out their phones and dial their parents. With constant intervention, is it any wonder that students are struggling with their ability to solve their own problems? This "hovering" process begins long before there is any distance separating parents from their kids. Bloomfield Hills Andover High School counselor Lisa Acton explains that there are some parents who are very concerned about their children and are very involved. Acton says this involvement isn't a negative thing; in fact, most of the time, it is the students with involved parents who succeed in school. "Involvement is important," Acton explains, "but there is a line you can cross where you become over-involved." Andover counselors Laura Hollyer-Madis and Alicja Jahnke agree that involvement can be posi- tive, but that often parents cross the over-involved line. These parents are the ones who complete the col- lege applications for their kids. They select everything, including their roommate, dorm rooms, meal plans and classes. "Students should be filling out their own applications; parents should not be filling them out for them," Acton says. According to Brown, helicopter parents are not a recent phenom- enon. However, they have become more prevalent in the last five to eight years. According to the College Parents of America survey, 81 percent of parents say they are more involved in the lives of their college student than their parents were with theirs. "I think it's really annoying," explains Andover High School sophomore Jessica Kepes. "After a while, we only need our parents to a certain extene Acton says, "I have encountered helicopter parents; they don't do their kids any favors. Those kids don't do well with someone rescu- ing them all the time. You need to experience setbacks early on; it's going to happen in life." - an lc,orn71:a_ -ploca who - a childr oath to Qclucat io n w___isl-Illisto__ in oca with o nonds-on -proer - oLm _ .,._ curr - icutai, onci ants hova o sou)_ __ bockerounds or - a walcokka -ploca whara a - cIKK2.1-5a a -FotAllias of -ploca who - toga (21- -Fun ond ibi4fas c21c2brul c is a w a lacrni _ JPI is 60!
