A
nswer: Dear Yossie, I'm
a fan of the regionally-
named Mediterranean
Diet. Although at least 16 different
countries border the Mediterranean
Sea, according to the American
Heart Association, a shared dietary
pattern exists:
• High consumption of
T fruits, vegetables, bread,
other cereals, potatoes,
beans, nuts and seeds;
• Olive oil is an important
monounsaturated fat
source;
• Dairy products, fish
and poultry are con-
sumed in low to moder-
ate amounts—little red
meat is eaten;
• Eggs are consumed zero
to four times a week;
• Wine (usually red) is consumed
in low to moderate amounts.

With it's emphasis on fresh fruits,
vegetables, and grains, the Medi-
terranean Diet is naturally high
in fiber and low in saturated fats.
One concern is the relatively high
percentage of calories from overall
fat, which may be contributing to
increased obesity in the region.
If you watch your overall fat
intake, I think the Mediterranean
Diet can be a healthy alternative.

Dear
Barb;YPlike
the idea of a
vegetarian diet,
but I'm not
quite ready to
make that leap. Are there other,
non-vegetarian diets that you might
recommend? Thanks, Yossie.
