RETIREMENT LIVING In a column titled "Universities are built on the bedrock of academic freedom" posted on the Michigan State Web site (www.umich.edu) on July 31, President Simon writes: "At issue is whether free intel- MSU's lectual exchange and scholarly Simon activity should be casualties of political disagreements and whether the threat of withholding them is an appropriate political tool. We say no. "In fact, we say that if the UK's UCU proceeds with such a boycott, they should apply it to our universities, as well, because we stand in solidarity with those scholars who would be punished." On the University of Michigan Web site (www.umich.edu ), President Coleman writes: "It is in the nature of academic boycotts directly to impede academic freedom and the intellectual discourse that are at the heart of our mission in higher education. I believe the call for a boycott is at best deeply misguided and antithetical to funda- mental academic values. "At the University of Michigan, we have many valued connections with colleagues in Israel; and I for one am "It's wonderful to be surrounded by friends." WSU's Reid U-M's Coleman prepared to stand in solidarity with Israeli academics in the face of a boy- cott, should it come to pass:" Wayne State University President Irvin Reid, who has consistantly refused calls to divest university investments from Israel, was quick to respond to the controversy. "I fully endorse the statement recently circulated by Columbia University President Lee Bollinger protesting the United Kingdom's University and College Union's deci- sion to support the principle of a boycott against Israeli academics and academic institutions:' said Reid. "This fundamentally indefensible action targets the very institutions we entrust to protect freedom of speech and encourage public debate and inap- propriately uses them for political ends."
