New MDA Station Tied To Michigan

E

arlier in the summer, a new Magen David Adorn
emergency station was dedicated in Ashdod, named
in honor of Natalie and Manny Charach of West
Bloomfield. The station was built largely by the Dr. John J.
Mames Chapter-Michigan Region of the American Friends of
MDA.
The need for the station arose after the original MDA sta-
tion was no longer able to meet the growing needs of the
city's residents. As the city grew around the original station,
traffic and a school hindered ambulance movement.
The new station serves nearly half a million people, includ-
ing communities surrounding the Gaza Strip. It houses 15
ambulances and includes a room for drivers, a volunteers'
recreation room, blood services, treatment room and a rein-
forced dispatching center.

Celebrations!

Stop The Outrage
Bill Schumer was upset by anti-Jewish graffiti defacing a stop sign
near his Detroit business. So he decided to take action.
The Bloomfield Hills resident is president of General Linen and
Uniform Service, an 88-year-old company started by his father, Harry,
a leader of the Labor Zionist Movement.
Five years ago, the business expanded by leasing the first floor of
the old Ford Motor Co. plant at 411 Piquette. As he drove home one
day, he noticed a stop sign painted over to read, "Stop The Jews:'
Schumer alerted the Detroit Police Department and the Bloomfield
Township office of the Anti-Defamation League as well as the IN.
"People should know about this outrage and beware said Schumer.
"I've decided to have the graffiti painted over to re-establish the
integrity of the stop sign:' he said. "The sign was intended for traffic,
not for any social comments:'

Jack "Jake" Ginsburg is ready to celebrate his 60th reunion from
Central High School and he wants fellow graduates to join him.

Day in The Park. Fetes 60th Reunion

They were born before television, penicillin, pantyhose, frozen foods,
contact lenses and credit cards. They got married first, then lived
together. To them, hardware was hardware and software wasn't even a
word. In their day, grass was mowed, "coke" was a cold drink and pot
was something you cooked in.
Today they are edging 80 — the men and women who graduated
Detroit's Central High School from 1947-1950.
"For more than 60 years, we've been the ones who built the syna-
gogues and built the suburbs," said Jack "Jake" Ginsburg, 78, of West
Bloomfield. "We were among the largest classes ever to graduate from
Central and we were about 90 percent Jewish."
Ginsburg thinks his 60th reunion is worth celebrating in casual,
simple style — with old friends and family members at a day in the
park from noon-4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 19, at Drake Sports Park (on
Drake between Maple and 14 Mile roads). No charge. No rain date.
Just bring your own refreshments, your family and friends, and relax.
Catch up on the good old days.
This old-fashioned reunion is open to all graduates from Central
High School from 1947-1950. Got any questions, call Jake at (248)
842-1738. He can answer them.

Conservation Tips

You can help stop global warming:
1.Take shorter showers.
2. Install low-flow shower heads and save.
3. Turn down water heater to 120F and insulate.
4. Buy a tankless water heater.
5. Be sure to turn all faucets off – completely! One drop per
second from a water faucet equals 200 gallons per month,
2,400 gallons each year. Leaky faucets are expensive.
6. Use cold-water detergents and cold water. Only the greasi-
est of clothing needs water warmer than 80 degrees. Cold-
water washing techniques can save you from $5 to $10 each
month.
