REVVED ENGINES: After a five-year shutdown, the Detroit Belle Isle Grand
Prix is up and running. The event, set for Aug. 31-Sept. 2, features two days of
speed divided into two divisions. The American LeMans Series (below) conducts
its inaugural race on Saturday, and the IndyCar Series' 16th race of its 17-race
schedule goes full throttle on Sunday. Drivers and spectators will find track and
sideline improvements since their last go-round: More than 130,000 square feet of
new concrete paving is being installed with special attention to pedestrian areas.
Discounted tickets for children open up opportunities for all the free entertain-
ment amid price-structured food concessions. Tickets range from $15-$150 based
on spectator location and the number of days attended. Proceeds support Belle Isle
improvements. (866) 484-PRIX; www.detroitgp.com .

BLUE WATER, BLUEGRASS: A trip up north can seem like a trip down
south: On Saturday, Sept. 2, during the second annual Boyne Mountain Bluegrass
Festival, Michigan travelers seeking out lake sports also can find the folk music
of the David Grisman Quintet headlining a full day of concerts that feature the
sounds of Packway Handle, Ruby Jane Smith, Lonesome Country Band and the
Gin Blossoms (opposite page, top). All concerts are held outdoors with the music
starting at 12:30 p.m. The mountain becomes natural stadium seating so visitors are
asked to bring blankets or folding chairs. There also will be kids' activities, unique
vendors, food and beverages. $29-$37/free for kids 10 and younger; additional fees
for scenic chairlift rides and parking. (800) 585-3737; www.boyne.com .
SALTY DIP: Theater buffs ready for a new production in the midst of the sum-
mer hiatus can take a drive out to Chelsea. It's the location for the world premiere
of Sea of Fools, written by Michigan actor Matt Letscher. The play, staged by Jeff
Daniels's Purple Rose Theatre Company, enters the fantasy world of a troupe of
actors at work during the McCarthy Era, when red-baiters ruined many artistic
lives. The comedy builds around an FBI agent masquerading as a gossip columnist's
assistant to learn about alleged Communist affiliations in the stage group. Letscher,
a Grosse Pointe native and University of Michigan graduate, directs the production
that features Sandra Birch, Grant Krause, John Lepard, Janet Maylie, Suzi Regan,
John Seibert, Guy Sanville and Clyde Brown. The show runs through Sept. 1. A
complete schedule, including matinee and evening performances, can be found
online at www.purplerosetheatre.org . $12.50-$35. (734) 433-7673. ❑
