It's been a hot summer, but it's
time to get ready for some even
hotter fall trends. With the back-
to-school season in full swing,
it's time to study up on which
looks are the must-haves. To
get the inside scoop, we turned
to two local shop owners with
their fingers on the fashion pulse.
Kim Rott Burns, owner of Syd
& Sams, which opened this past
December in Royal Oak, stocks
her store with functional and
trendy clothes for boys and girls
sized 6-16 and juniors. Stacie
Maier owns two Birmingham
boutiques: 110 Couture just
celebrated its fifth anniversary
of offering high-end women's
pieces, and Roses are Red, sched-
uled to open in mid-August,
brims with chic looks for girls
sizes 7-14. Here, both Burns and
Maier weigh in on the trendy fall
must-haves for this year's back-
to-school season:

THERE'S
NOTHING MORE
UNFASHIONABLE)
THAN PAYING
FULL RETAIL.

2. Logo T-shirts
3. Sweatshirts

4. Puma and other sportswear
5. Loungewear (functional and
comfortable)

Top: Two-button vest, Si 2.98, long-sleeve
ruffle-front knit top, $10.98, and wide-leg
jean with suspenders, $14.98. Center: Sheer
black turtleneck, $10.98, and houndstooth
coat, S19.98. Above: Sarah Jessica Parker
tells how her name, Parker, came about.
"My great-grandfather on my father's side
came over to Ellis Island. His name was Bar-
Kahn, which means 'son of Kohen,' and the
immigration officer thought he said `Parken.'
He wrote his Ns like Rs, so `Parken' became
`Parker' and he was so happy to be in
America that he never corrected his custom-
ers and he became Parker. So there's also
great pride attached to this idea that we're
Kohens, the great tribe of Israel."
