What's hot

and happening

in restaurants,

retail and

more.

RAZZLE DAZZLE For all things sparkly, there is Sparkling Elegance (above) in
Walled Lake, an undersized store filled with oversized eye candy. Owned and operated
by 19-year-old West Bloomfield resident Heather Kral, the all-pink shop, striped with
thin, vertical mirrors, is filled with jewelry, handbags, perfume bottles, hair accessories
and much more. And most everything is under $30. (248) 926 2511

CAN-DO Local artist Jason Driscoll has taken recycling to the next level by creat-
ing fin and functional items for the home — from recycled beverage cans. Among
the objects, picture frames ($20-$60; below, left) and mirrors ($150) can be found at
Dancing Eye Gallery, with locations in Northville and Walled Lake. (248) 449 7086

GOOD STUFF When native-Chicagoan graphic designer Claire Nelson and
native-Detroiter Francis Grunow (executive director of Preservation Wayne) left
their common ground of New York City five years ago and moved into the historic
Canfield Lofts in Detroit, they found a gaping void in the city's retail landscape. Now,
suburbanites are hitting the highway to explore the couple's answer to their perplex-
ing problem: They opened Bureau of Urban Living, a modern-day general store for
city dwellers, in the ground floor of the Canfield Lofts, just below their apartment.
"This kind of store is totally unique in downtown Detroit," says Nelson. "We carry
a little bit of everything: dish and glassware, towels and bedding, desk and travel
accessories, city books, witty cards and modern gifts." Among the award-win-
ning product lines offered is the Ann Arbor-based Buttoned Up!, creators of
Binder Kits (shown on shelves, right) to organize your life (starting at $25).

BIG IDEA In the 1920s, cleaning-supply salesman Norman Snitz sold
his wares door-to-door on Detroit's buzzing Broadway. Almost 80 years
later, his grandson, Todd Stern, has opened a restaurant on that same
street — again abuzz, thanks, in part, to Stern, who learned to cook in
the kitchen with his mother and bubbie. The first in the area to offer
an array of appetizer-portion dishes, Detroit's Small Plates (right) has
garnered national attention for its petite tenderloin, pizza and more.
Now, five years after opening his original location, Stern — named last
year as one of Crain's "40 Under 40" — plans to expand with a second
location in Royal Oak slated for this fall. Now that's big!
