• editor's letter MISSION STATEMENT Platinum is a monthly lifestyle magazine published by the Detroit Jewish News. It reflects all aspects of life in the Metro Detroit Jewish community, including decor, fashion, food, health, spirituality, books, shopping and more. Whether profiling a unique member of our community or the latest hot spot or trend you should know about, Platinum's got it covered. Our goal is to be a part of the fabric of the Jewish and Metro Detroit communities and to reflect those who have created it — our readers. BACK TO SCHOOL. My mother has always loved this time of year. She was a kinder- garten teacher before my brother and I were born, and running a close second to nurturing those young, open minds, I think her favorite part was shopping for school supplies. She still keeps a drawer full of bottles of Elmer's glue, colored pencils and other tricks of her trade. And she seems to have passed that fondness along to me, too. Even though I'm long (long!) out of school, I still find a certain cozy comfort in this time of year — gearing up for a new year, a fresh start, a change in the season. Of course, high on many a student's agenda is shopping for the most imperative of school supplies: clothes. So in this end-of-summer issue, we gathered up two of the Jewish News' indispensable (and adorable) summer interns to inject some fresh style into our annual back- to-school fashion shoot, which this year offers a preview of the fall line of Sarah Jessica Parker's new line, Bitten. Andrea Racey, 21, who grew up in Huntington Woods, is studying fashion design at Columbia College in Chicago. So she jumped at the chance to style our model/writer, Aviva Berlin. Aviva — who modeled our prom fashions last year when she was graduating from Bloomfield Hills Andover High School — also is interning in our offices for the summer before she heads into her sophomore year at the University of Michigan, where she is studying communications and psychology. Look for her lovely face as well as her sidebar on top trends for back to school in "Take A Bite" on page 14. Also in this issue, writer Megan Swoyer visits a West Bloomfield couple who have trans- formed a no-frills, singles-only dude ranch into an action-packed family destination. Take a peek at the Double JJ Ranch's newest addition in "Last Splash" on page 20. And savor your favorite end-of-summer fruits and vegetables with enticing recipes excerpted from Dr. Arthur Agatston's newest book, The South Beach Diet Taste of Summer Cookbook. Lynne Konstantin, editor lkonstantin@thejewishnews.com platinum Above: Aviva Berlin tripled her duties in this month's Platinum as an intern, model and writer. See her dressed for back to school in Sarah Jessica Parker's new 320-and-under line, Bitten, created with Steve & Barry's (page 14). ■ giveaway A new winner every month! visit JNonline.us for details last month's winner Marilyn, of West Bloomfield, won July's °Stud iO36.cOm AUGUST GIVEAWAY: Wine Handmade GIFT CERTIFICATE TO tL0fT Silk Matzah Cover With Studio 36, you can shop from the comfort of your home and give a gift that will be treasured for years to come.
