Persistent sleep loss may impair the immune system and cognitive abilities. Chronic loss of sleep has also been linked to adult diabetes, heart disease, and weight gain. Foods/things to avoid: Caffeine: found in choco- late, cocoa, soft drinks and -r- some medications; • Alcohol and nicotine: normally, not an issue with children, but it's always smart to be vigilant about contents/ingredi- ents; • Spicy foods and overly sweet and fatty foods (and just plain overeat- ing) can cause indigestion and discomfort. Foods/things that may help: • Foods that contain tryptophan (e.g., milk, cottage cheese, eggs, turkey, and tuna); • Chamomile or passion flower teas; • Foods/supplements that contain melatonin, magnesium, iron, or vitamin B complex (always check with your doctor first); • Regular daily exercise. I hope this answers your question.
