nswer: Dear Sleepless
Sonya's Mom, A good
night's sleep is important.
Persistent sleep loss may impair
the immune system and cognitive
abilities. Chronic loss of sleep has
also been linked to adult diabetes,
heart disease, and weight gain.
Foods/things to avoid:
Caffeine: found in choco-
late,
cocoa, soft drinks and
-r-
some medications;
• Alcohol and nicotine:
normally, not an issue with
children, but it's always
smart to be vigilant
about contents/ingredi-
ents;
• Spicy foods and overly
sweet and fatty foods
(and just plain overeat-
ing) can cause indigestion
and discomfort.
Foods/things that may help:
• Foods that contain tryptophan
(e.g., milk, cottage cheese, eggs,
turkey, and tuna);
• Chamomile or passion flower
teas;
• Foods/supplements that contain
melatonin, magnesium, iron, or
vitamin B complex (always check
with your doctor first);
• Regular daily exercise.
I hope this answers your question.
