Basmati Blues Producer Monique
Caulfield and Screenwriter-
Director Danny Baron

oped the script with Jeff Dorchen
and Danny Thompson, friends from
Michigan. "This is going to be a musi-
cal, and the composing is almost
finished."
Besides being a story about a love
triangle that includes an American
woman and two Indian men, the
script focuses on the character of the
woman's father, a scientist. While the
scientist believes his discoveries will
help struggling farmers with their rice
crops, his employers use the findings
to make money for themselves at the
expense of the farmers' livelihood.
"There's an added benefit to making
films in India," Baron says. "It costs
about 65 percent less to shoot a film
there."
Baron's best-known Hollywood
script assignment has been for See
Spot Run, a Warner Brothers produc-
tion about a dog witnessing a crime.
He says it's about the only family film
in his credits. Another project was the
MGM release Queen of the NFL, a
sequel to The Birdcage.
Baron traveled to Michigan this
summer to seek investors and visit
family. His parents are longtime Oak
Park residents Evelyn Baron, a social
worker, and Eugene Baron, an optom-
etrist. His brothers Anthony and Eric
are area doctors, while brother Jeff is a
designer and builder in Seattle.
The writer-director was accompa-
nied by his wife, Monique Caulfield,
producer of Basmati Blues. With this
project, she is getting a firsthand ini-
tiation into filmmaking after years of
working in the field of environment-
friendly building.
"I started experimenting with film
when I attended Ferndale High School
and watched movies at the Detroit

Institute of Arts:' says Baron, whose
religious education was at the Jewish
Parents Institute and who later spent
time on an Israeli kibbutz. "When I
was at the University of Michigan, I
began a theater group.
"After graduation, I went on to take
film classes at New York University
on the advice of a professor. I wrote a
funny film and got work with a studio
before leaving NYU.
"My film was picked to be shown
in Los Angeles, and I pitched an idea
to Paramount. I was hired to write
Fat Chance, which is about two
overweight cat burglars who are very
incompetent."
Baron, who earned money as a pro-
fessional blackjack player in his early
California years, has written scripts
reflecting his imagination and has
worked on some scripts furthering the
imagination of others.
Trips back to Michigan have allowed
him time to teach his craft as a guest
lecturer in Ann Arbor. A producer
involved with a writing assignment
in California introduced Baron to
Bollywood cinema and the creative
possibilities it offers.
"I watched a bunch of films made
in India and thought they showed a
fun style," Baron says. "Jeff, Danny and
I kicked around different ideas, and a
couple of them came together."
With the three writers in distant
locales, they collaborate over the
Internet. The writing trio developed
the storyline during a meeting in Ann
Arbor.
As Baron looks for dancers to
appear in his musical, he may contact
Indian-based dance specialist Sharon
Lowen (see related story). Although
he does not know Lowen personally,
the writer-director learned about her
achievements during his recent visit to
the Metro Detroit area.
"My sense of humor can be self-
deprecating," says Baron, who contin-
ues to come up with possible script
ideas. "I think that's part of Jewish
humor." I I
