LaVerne Jackson who reminded
that many patients would have
access to the rabbi from their con-
gregation.
"I learned a lot:' said Gloria
Stabryla, assistant nurse manager
of pre-surgical services, who said
the only thing she knew coming
in was that Jewish people don't eat
pork and celebrate the Sabbath
Friday and Saturday.
For her, finding out that anything
that has an end-of-life patient's
blood or tissue on it must be buried
with the most religious Jews was
entirely new.
"Spirituality is very important
to people, especially when they're
sick:' Stabryla said. "It's important
as nurses that we understand not
just Jewish, but all people'

Zaks, who grew up in
Detroit's Dexter area
and graduated from Cass
Technical High School
and WSU, has held a num-
ber of other positions at
Providence. They include:
membership on the board
of directors, chairman of
the Department of Internal
Medicine, associate direc-
tor of medical affairs and
program director and educa-
tion coordinator for internal
medicine.
He was instrumental in
founding the Caduceus
Society, a philanthropic
organization of physicians,
and has served as chair-
man since 1991. Graduating
residents have voted him the
Outstanding Clinical Faculty
Award a number of times.
"Working for faith-based
care has reinvigorated my
service to every one." Zaks
said. "It's like tikkun olam,
repairing the world one per-
son at a time."
