2007
ummer is a fine time to
remember those whose lives
have been disrupted because
of family violence, those who can-
not enjoy the usual pleasures of this
season.
On June 24, members of Temple
Israel in Bay City decided to bring
some fun and relief to the women
and children housed at the Bay City
Women's Shelter. Kelli Jolly, chairper-
son of "Mitzvah Day — Minutes That
Matter;' had arranged activity centers
with the shelter's director, Regina
Turner.
Mothers relaxed in a spa room with
peppermint-scented footbaths, low
lighting and soft, meditative music, all
arranged by salon owner June Soehnel.
Meanwhile, children were busy getting
their faces painted or making colorful
visors with the help of teens Allison
Goldstein, Zoey Stickler, Autumn
Freed and Samantha Kershen. Others
were busy trying out some of the toys
and books donated by members of the
congregation, or dodging the shovels
of mulch being spread by the adults
around the playground and land-
scaped areas, led by master gardener
Ruth Blumenstein.
Those who wanted to consult a
doctor for minor ailments could do
so for free in the Health Check Room
where Dr. Glenn Kershen offered his
expertise. Even the infants were gently
rocked and bottle-fed in the caring
arms of Kayla Kershen, June Yerke and
Marie Luscomb.
After a lunch of sandwiches and
homemade side dishes, the afternoon
was capped off with a wonderful per-
formance by the dogs and owners of
the Paws to Read Therapy program,
Gail Kershen and Sophie, the
therapy dog
led by Kathleen Miller, which brings
trained dogs to help children practice
and improve their reading skills. A
mini-circus came next with dog tricks.
Among the other participants from
Temple Israel were Ken Jolly, Luka
Jolly, Paloma Jolly, Gail Kershen, Max
Kershen, Beth Cook, Jane Rogers,
Susan Meade, Darrel Ninberg, Lloyd
Asmus, David Goldstein, Noah and
Brenna Luscomb, Judith Kerman, Jane
Kleynberg and Hal Blumenstein. I
